KCRCC Chairman Brent Regan’s Response to Tom Luna

Mr. Luna,

Allow me to disabuse you of your considerable misconceptions regarding the duty of elected party officials and the avoidance of conflicts of interest. Your misunderstanding of these matters is well documented though your unilateral actions as IDGOP Chairman that were a significant factor in your failed reelection bid.

I do not serve on the Idaho Freedom PAC board and am not involved in the operation of that organization. My only donation to the Idaho Freedom PAC was back in May 2022 when the IFPAC was supporting several Republicans for the Primary. I have not, and would not donate to any organization (e.g. I.A.C.I) that was actively supporting non-Republican candidates. This is a matter of public record with the Idaho Secretary of State. Contrary to your assertion, I have broken no rule or proposed rule.

Even a trivial investigation into the Idaho Freedom FOUNDATION, Idaho Freedom ACTION, and Idaho Freedom PAC would discover that these are three DIFFERENT organizations with three DIFFERENT boards. Your sophestry is an act of deliberate deception. You cannot plea ignorance because you were made aware of the facts before sending your missive.

Your statement about passing a "rule" at the State Convention is also a lie. As chairman you know that we do not pass party rules at the convention, we only pass party rules at party meetings. Falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus.

As for your demand that elected party officials be consistent, in my case you are too late. Over a week ago I wrote and published two essays the clearly delineate the situation. I have copied the latest below for your edification.

I have also personally contacted individuals who were supporting non-Republicans and reminded them of the prior Republican party support they enjoyed. They found my argument persuasive and retracted their support.

Good party leadership requires an understanding of duties and responsibilities and an even handed application of rules and policy. Your words reflect none of these qualities and I am grateful for the clear vision and steady hand of our current chairman.

I won't bother calling for an apology or retraction from you as those would have no more credibility than your unfortunate and fallacious email. However, I do suspect you will once again come to regret your actions.

Regards
Brent Regan

When you are a member of a committee, board or party you enter into an agreement that when you reach a decision then ALL members are bound by that decision. The will of the majority becomes the will of the body. Suppose you are an elected member of a board and everybody on the board except you votes to meet on Tuesdays. Can you then demand that everyone meets on the day you wanted? No. Can you hold a meeting on your day with nobody else there? No. You are bound by the will of the majority because that is what you agreed to do when you were elected to the board. Sometimes you will be in the majority and you will expect everyone to abide by the decision of the board and sometimes you will be in the minority and you will be expected to abide by the decision of the board. Without this agreement there is no reason to have a board at all.

I am an ELECTED member of the Republican Party and we HAD a primary election to select our Republican nominees for the general election. That election is not contested. Many of the candidates I vigorously and publicly supported won and a few did not. If I deny the validity of the primary and publicly support someone who did NOT win the primary then I am also denying the validity of the primary for those that I did support.

If you are NOT an ELECTED Republican Party member, even if you Affiliated with the party, you are free to support whatever candidate you chose whenever you want, and I support your right to do that. However, as an ELECTED Party Member I am bound by the results of the primary and so I cannot publicly support another candidate. To do so would break the compact I have with the my fellow Republican Party members, and that would be dishonorable.

My official public position as an ELECTED Republican Party official is that I support all Republican Party nominees. I do not have the same freedom you now enjoy. I hope you understand and stop demanding that I break my word of honor as those efforts will be fruitless. You have my word.

While you may not respect my position, I respect yours (someone who is not an elected party member) and fully support your freedom to advocate for the candidate of your choice.

Brent Regan
